The lavender varieties that we grow:
Lady Lavender {Lavandula officinalis}
Grows well from seed and can flower in its first year of growth. Typically grows to about 12 inches/30 cm in diameter and
height.
Munstead {lavandula angustifolia}
It is better grown using cuttings as the strike rate for growing from seed is low without optimal conditions. Munstead grows to a height and width of about 18-24 inches/45-60 cm.
Hidcote {lavandula angustifolia}
It is better grown using cuttings as the strike rate for growing from seed is low without optimal conditions. Hidcote grows to a height and width of about 18 inches/45 cm.
We use English varieties of lavender because
- they are hardy to our growing climate (zone 5)
- they produce a finer fragrance than other varieities {Lavandula x intermedia} (Grosso, Porvence) which have more of a camphorous smell
We have found that Lady Lavender, Munstead and Hidcote grow well here in our zone 5b climate. For more information on planting lavender click here. For information on caring for lavender plants once they are planted click here.
